The Speedway Motors Homebuilt Heaven Award went to Gary and Betty Derner of Mesa, AZ and their custom 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix convertible – it’s 1st time at a Goodguys Rod & Custom Association car show! In 1972, Gary purchased the car new, used for a few years, and sold it. His wife wanted her daily driver back and years later, he found the car in rough condition as a barn find for only $50! He salvaged the wheels and steering wheel and then purchased another one in better shape & 50,000 original miles. She was skeptical about his plan to chop the roof but now loves it! Gary loves the styling of the car, the smooth ride and power for such a large car, complete with an original 455 engine. He looked to Speedway Motors for numerous parts – this is the one restoration project of many he’s kept after moving to Phoenix from Minnesota, we are sure glad he did! Congratulations to the Derner family, winners of the Homebuilt Heaven award at the final Goodguys show of the season!
